M-KOPA Solarm a solar power provider in Kenya, was announced the winner of the Zayed Future Energy Prize at the on going Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week 2015, entitling them to a cash prize of $1.5 million.
This achievement makes M-KOPA the first company from sub-saharan Africa to be awarded the Zayed Future Energy prize in the Small and Medium Enterprise category.
Jesse Moore, M-KOPA Solar’s Managing director and co-founder, indicated that the company will use the cash prize to kickstart a technical and business skill program called M-KOPA University for its employees, sales agents and partners.
“we are honoured to win the Zayed Future Energy Prize. The prize brings global attention to M-KOPA Solar’s business model, which has brought clean, affordable solar power to 150,000 homes in East Africa in less than three years. We believe that the ‘wireless energy’ revolution is just beginning and that M-KOPA Solar will soon power millions living off the grid” said Jesse Moore.
The Zayed Future Energy prize is awarded to organizations that impact the society through renewable energy. The award is named after Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan al Nahyan, the late President of the United Arab Emirates.
