After blocking messaging and voice call application Viber last week, the Saudi Arabian kingdom is now looking into blocking WhatsApp. According to Abdullah AL-DARRAB head of the Communications and Information Technology Commission, the CITC has “been communicating with WhatsApp and other similar platforms to get them to cooperate and comply with the Saudi telecom providers however nothing has come of this communication yet.”
With a population of over 9 million expatriates, it would appear that the CITC is targeting all VoIP applications as it is losing revenue on international calls and texts. WhatsApp will be blocked before July 9th. Next on the list is Skype if the company fails to cooperate.
